Flying Alone With a Baby? Read This First

Travelling abroad alone with a new baby can feel equal parts exciting and terrifying. Before my first solo trip with my little one, I imagined chaos at every stage, the airport, security, the plane, the luggage, the crying. What I learned very quickly is that travelling with a baby is not only possible, it can actually be far easier than we build it up to be.
If I could go back and tell myself a few things before that first trip, these would be at the top of the list.
1. You Usually Get Extra Baggage Allowance for Your Baby
This was something I had absolutely no idea about before travelling. Even if your baby doesn’t have their own seat, most airlines still allow extra baggage for infants, whether that’s an additional cabin bag, a checked bag, or baby equipment.
The allowance varies depending on the airline, so it’s definitely worth checking before you travel.
Babies may be tiny, but their stuff definitely isn’t.
2. Families with Infants Often Board First
One of the biggest surprises for me was discovering that airlines usually allow families with babies to board before everyone else.
At first, I thought boarding early would just mean more time sitting on the plane with a baby, but honestly, it helped so much. I had time to settle in, store bags properly, and get comfortable without feeling rushed or stressed while hundreds of people squeezed past me.
If you’re travelling solo with a baby, take every bit of extra time and support you can get.
3. Your Stroller Will Usually Get Checked Anyway
I spent ages debating whether to bring the stroller through the airport, thinking I’d desperately need it the whole time. The driver reality is that most airlines will check your stroller anyway, either at oversized baggage or right at the aircraft door before boarding.
Once it’s gone, you’re left carrying your baby through the airport regardless. My baby carrier absolutely saved me. It kept my hands free for passports, luggage, security bins, and snacks, and it made moving through the airport so much easier. Looking back, I honestly would travel lighter and rely on the carrier every single time…and pockets, wear clothing with pockets!
4. People Are Kinder Than You Expect
This is probably the thing I wish I’d known most.
I was so anxious about doing everything alone, but complete strangers stepped in to help me constantly. People carried luggage up and down stairs, held doors open, helped me lift bags into overhead lockers, and even held my baby (stewardess, not “strangers”) while I quickly went to the toilet on the plane.
Travelling alone with a baby reminded me that most people are genuinely good and happy to help when they see a parent struggling.
5. Pack a Change of Clothes for You Too!
Everyone remembers spare baby clothes. Hardly anyone remembers themselves. Spit-up, leaking nappies, spilled milk, or unexpected sickness can leave you sitting on a long flight feeling miserable in dirty clothes. Having a clean top or lightweight outfit for yourself can make a huge difference to your comfort during travel days.
Trust me on this one.
Final Thoughts
Before my first solo trip abroad with my baby, I thought I needed to prepare for every possible disaster, but what I actually needed was confidence.
If you’re about to travel alone with your baby for the first time, take a deep breath, you are far more capable than you think and it will be a memory you have together, forever.
