When you have a 3-month-old, reading might feel a little… one-sided. Your baby isn’t turning pages or asking for “just one more,” but this stage is so important for building early language, sensory awareness, and bonding.
As a first-time mom, I’ve found that the best books at this age aren’t about long stories, they’re about interaction, repetition, and stimulation. Here are my top three favourites that we keep coming back to every single day.
1. Don’t Tickle the Tiger
This one is such a hit in our house, and honestly, it feels more like playtime than reading.
What we love most is the sensory experience. Each page has different textures for little hands to explore, and the sound element adds an extra layer of excitement. At 3 months, babies are just starting to engage more with their surroundings, so books that do something really hold their attention.
It’s also:
- Simple and repetitive, which is perfect for early learning
- Bright and vivid, making it visually stimulating
- Easy to build on—you can use it for counting, animal sounds, or even just exaggerating reactions to keep baby engaged
It’s one of those books you can read again and again without it feeling boring (for you or baby).
2. That’s Not My Cat
If you’re looking for a classic sensory book, this is such a good one.
Again, it’s repetitive and simple, which is exactly what babies need at this stage. The repeated phrase helps them start recognising patterns in language, even if they can’t respond yet.
What makes this book really special:
- It introduces different textures on each page
- It focuses on body parts and descriptive words (like soft, rough, fluffy)
- It encourages you to naturally talk more and you can expand on each page with your own words
It’s a lovely way to start building vocabulary early, without it feeling forced.
Baby’s First Stories by Jane Foster
This one is a bit different from the others, and that’s exactly why we love it.
At 3 months, babies are still developing their vision, so high-contrast books are incredibly engaging. This one uses bold black, white, and blue colours, which are perfect for capturing their attention.
Why it stands out:
- It includes four stories in one, so there’s more variety
- The stories are slightly more detailed, which makes them more enjoyable for you as the reader
- It’s full of verbs and actions, which makes it great for interaction
This is a book where you can really bring the story to life, acting things out, changing your voice, and making it a shared experience rather than just reading words on a page.
At this age, reading isn’t about finishing a story, it’s about:
- Connection
- Repetition
- Sensory exploration
Don’t worry if your baby only pays attention for a few seconds at a time. That’s completely normal. What matters is the routine and interaction you’re building together.
If you’re just starting your reading journey with your little one, these three books are such a great place to begin. Simple, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable, for both of you.
And honestly? That’s what makes them keepers.
If you’ve found any favourites with your 3-month-old, I’d love to hear them, I'm always on the lookout for new ones to try!
