Becoming a mum is a transformative journey, but it doesn't mean you have to lose your sense of self or style. Yet, for many of us, the quest for fashionable breastfeeding clothing often feels like an impossible mission!
After many a late night baby feeds scouring the internet for just this, fashionable breastfeeding clothing, I have good news and bad news.
The bad news, is that although there are many companies selling breastfeeding clothing, I can count on my hand the number of 'fashionable' items I found. Most items either have unflattering cuts, zippers in awkward places (though in fairness, breast accessible), or the patterns are floral and look like something my grandma would not even wear. Long story short, I have given up!
However, this is where we get to the good news...
... breastfeeding specific clothing is not necessary.
Forget traditional nursing clothes, here are six styles that facilitate nursing and even better, you probably already have some of them in your closet.
Stretchy long-sleeve tops
I love a good turtleneck in the winter, but any top that is stretchy will do. If you also like a turtleneck and want to make use of maternity clothes, try these from Isabella Oliver paired with a pair of cute jeans and a boot.
Wrap dresses and shirts
The crossover design allows the fabric to be pulled to the side quickly. If you prefer not to pull the fabric, some dresses tie at two points (internally and externally) so you can untie the external section and the rest of the dress will still stay in place. Wrap dresses and shirts are everywhere but I like these...

Cross-over tops
Like the wrap style but without a tie, as long as the fabric is stretchy or loose, the material can be pulled to the side ... and the breast is served.
I also really like this one from Sezane Abélia Blouse - Black - Recycled polyester - Sézane
Button up shirts (ideally snaps for speed!)
I would ideally prefer snaps for speed but sometimes beggars can't be choosers. A button up shirt with a little give is perfect as all you need to do is undo a few buttons and you are good to go. This is very versatile and can be paired with jeans, work trousers or a skirt. It is perfect if you need to look a little smart for a quick pop into the office.
Another from Sezane which is less traditional and could be great for the spring or summer! Eneala Shirt - Ecru - Organic Cotton - Sézane
Button up or zip (front) dresses
Like the button up shirts, as long as the fabric has some give you just need to undo a few buttons or unzip a short length and you are ready to feed your little one.
Reiss has a cute one for the office Reiss Quilted Zip-Through Sleeveless Dress in Black
Finally.... Halter tops/dresses
As long as you have a nursing shawl or cover handy, this is perfect for the late spring and summer as you just need to undo the neck tie and you're ready to feed! The look can be a bit glamorous like with the Zara Satin Halter or more relaxed and beach ready.
BONUS top!
Whilst I was looking for some styles, I came across the Jacopo top from Sezane which with the side ties would be PERFECT paired with cute palazzo trousers for a summer picnic or beach feed!
A few other points to keep in mind:
The Power of Layering
Wearing a stretchy vest top or camisole underneath another top means that you can lift your outer top and pull down the camisole, providing coverage and making feeding much more discreet without exposing your midriff. Cardigans, open shirts, or light jackets can also be great for added coverage and style.
Fabric Considerations
As briefly noted fabric choice for comfort, breathability, and practicality (e.g., easy to wash, forgiving with spills) is important. When choosing styles, consider soft, stretchy materials like jersey, cotton, or modal are not only comfortable for you and baby but also practical for easy washing and forgiving any little spills.
Footwear and Accessories
Don't forget the power of accessories! A statement necklace (just be mindful of little hands!), a stylish scarf, or comfortable yet chic footwear can complete your look and make you feel polished, even on those sleep-deprived days.
Ultimately, the message is clear: breastfeeding mums don't have to compromise on their personal style. With a little planning and the right choices, you can confidently look and feel your best while nurturing your little one.
